Chapter Six

Colin

“Why do you do this?” I asked into the silence that had followed my romp with Ben.

It lingered for a few moments, then he replied, “What? Fuck you?”

Wrapped around him, I could feel his chuckle more than I heard it, a soft vibration against my chest and arms. “I know this may sound shallow,” he continued, “but have you looked in the mirror recently? And then of course—”

“Not that.”

“What then? Suck your blood?”

I bit back a groan. Nothing like some thorny pillow talk to chase away the last mellow feelings of post-coital bliss—not that shagging with Ben had been a particularly blissful event. It had been good, yes, satisfying, of course, but despite the obvious efforts he’d made, I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Mikey. And not just Mikey. Shoving the thought away, I looked up at Ben. “No. I already know why you do that. But why do you get Mikey involved? I’ve been trying to keep him out of this.”

Ben raised an eyebrow. “Oh, have you? I seem to remember you were trying to keep him as close as you could. Weren’t you the one who asked me to teach the two of you some kinky techniques?”

I sighed. “I did, but… Bloody hell, this just doesn’t make sense anymore. I—I’m confused and half of the time I don’t have a clue what’s going on. All I know is that I want to be with Mikey and know that he’s safe. And I miss Sasha.”

The name was out before I could stop myself and a painful wave of regret welled up in my chest as I said it. With it came all the memories—his face, the sound of his voice, the texture of his silky, long blond hair. “I—I miss him so much, Ben. I never realized how much I loved him, how much… How much he really meant to me. To us.”

Ben didn’t seem surprised. Was I really that transparent? He tightened his embrace and stroked my upper arm with his fingertips. “Shh. Don’t give up hope, Colin. Have you tried to talk to him? Maybe he—”

“Of course I have, about a million times, but he won’t take or return my calls.”

“I’m sorry. Maybe—”

I held up my hand and wriggled away from him. “Don’t. Don’t make me hope for something that isn’t going to happen. And even if he did want me—or rather us—back, it’s probably for the best that he isn’t around right now. That way at least he won’t get hurt.”

Ben perked up a bit at my last sentence, then he watched me with a thoughtful expression. “Why would he get hurt?”

I rolled my eyes and slipped out of bed. “Can’t you guess?” I didn’t really want to talk about this and I was too distressed to steer the conversation back to where I wanted it, so it was a relief when Ben still hadn’t said anything by the time I had reached the bathroom door.

“Pete and his group?” he said quietly.

I froze, resting my hand on the doorknob.
