CHAPTER 10

WHERE IS HOME?

Newport Beach, California

1966

“Al can you get the door? I’ve got my hands full.”

“Sure Mary.” Al Romano opens his front door and sees Harry Krebbs looking tired and dejected on the porch. “We got your letter last week, Harry. Welcome … come in, come in. Can you stay awhile?”

“With Elizabeth’s condition, I’ve got to play things by ear and work my schedule around Gilbert and Alice who are taking care of her while I’m gone. I’ve got to be back in four or five days.”

Mary comes into the living room, gives Harry a big hug and says, “Good to see you, Harry. We are so sad about Elizabeth. Thank you for keeping us informed … how is she doing?”

“Oh, about the same. She has a few days when she can have almost normal discussions but then something completely off the wall comes out of her mouth without any warning. She’s really not aware of where she is and often asks, ‘When are we going to Denton?’ Her mobility is starting to decline. I can see her in a wheelchair before too long … afraid she’ll fall. I’m having a carpenter come out to the house and build some ramps.”

“We’re very sorry to hear that, Harry. We have a bad situation with Stevie. He’s out of the Army hospital now and is running around with a bunch of anti-war hippies in a psychedelic bus. He’s badly disfigured, grows his hair below his shoulders to hide his wounds, hobbles around on crutches cause he won’t wear his artificial leg, and he’s stoned most of the time. He called us about a month ago and neither one of us knew what he was talking about.”

“Too bad, he was always such a great kid, but he’s been through so very much. Al, have you had any time to think about getting me a rental on the house? I’d like to get a yearly lease, until I know what the situation with Elizabeth is going to be.”

“Harry I’m only working a couple of days a week now … doctors orders … my bum ticker, you know. But getting a lease on your house will be no problem at all. If you want, I can set up an interview for you with prospective renters, or I can do it … you know, pick my own neighbors … I’d like that.”

“I’d like that too, but don’t be in any hurry. If something comes up, let me know. I want the right people for your neighbors. I don’t want to run an ad … and they have to know the house comes with four chickens. How much can I get for rent?”

“Hell, at least $400 a month, maybe $450? But I may have to build a chicken pen over here.”

“Wow, in Denton you can rent a mansion for that.”

“You’ve got a great place there, Harry … be surprised how much an ocean or bay view is worth.”

“Yeah, well it would be a much better view without your eucalyptus trees.
