The morning light streamed through the curtains, and I lay still, the events of the night playing on a loop in my mind. Avery was curled up beside me, her breathing soft and even, and I couldn’t tear my eyes away from her. She looked so peaceful, so right in my bed, and for a moment, I let myself imagine that this could be more than just a stolen night.

But reality was a stubborn intruder. The risks we were taking, the ethical lines we’d crossed—it all hit me like a cold wave, dousing the remnants of last night’s heat. I knew I had to face the consequences, but I wasn’t ready to let go of her yet.

Avery stirred, her eyes fluttering open. She blinked up at me, a sleepy smile tugging at her lips, and for a brief, reckless moment, everything felt perfect.

“Morning,” she said, her voice husky from sleep.

“Morning,” I replied, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Last night...”

“Don’t say it was a mistake,” she interrupted, her eyes pleading. “Don’t make this feel wrong.”

I sighed, torn between the undeniable chemistry and the harsh reality of our situation. “It wasn’t wrong, Avery. But it can’t happen again.”

She sat up, the sheets pooling around her, and fixed me with a determined stare. “Gabriel, I don’t regret any of it. And I don’t think you do either.”

“I don’t,” I admitted, my voice heavy. “But it’s complicated.”

Avery reached out, her hand resting on mine. “We’ll figure it out. Together.”

I wanted to believe her, wanted to cling to the hope that we could make this work. But as we sat there, tangled in each other’s arms, I knew one thing: we were playing with fire. Sooner or later, someone would get burned.
