And the rumble of guns and Rebel yells
Made us sorry to have been born.
The battle raged for three long days
As our outposts, each one fell
To the regiments of infantry and artillery,
It was a living hell.
General Wessells knew quite well
That defeat was sure to come,
So to save the rest from loss of life
A surrender was called and done.
Our peaceful little Plymouth town
Was no longer a quiet place,
But now the bullets, shells, and human blood
Brought the tears upon our face!
So gradually, we now knew
That our fate was known and sealed;
We have been captured as prisoners,
And we are herded to a field!
We stacked our muskets and bayonets,
No more parades and glory,
Our lives have somehow now become...
Just prisoners with their story!
A story of heartbreak, a story of pain,
A story of hunger, disease, and death,
A story of heartache, and a story of prayer
As it muttered from a fleeting breath!
They marched us all to an open field,
We there would spend the night.
The guards were posted near and far,
As we saw them in fading light!
Where will we finally go?
This is a question in our hearts,
As our eyelids close so slow.
No happy dreams are ours tonight
As we lay in an open field.
We only ask our God above,
To be our Hope and Shield!
And so tonight in candle glow
We stand in that very fieldâ¦
A field of memories, of shattered dreams
For those whom the bell has tolled.
In our hearts and in our minds,
Our ancestors we recall,
Who spent one horrible and awful life
In this very field so small!
Our Father, we offer prayer
For those we know and love,
For all those soldiers, brave and dear,
Whom you have called to Him above.
