Chapter Twenty-Three
The woman stole herself from her inquisitive company, having ordered them to remain; she needed to be alone for some time. The route to her quarters had become too familiar, antagonising her more with each passing day. She grew restlessâeager to move on.
Inside, she cursed the Warlock for retaining his silence; even though she had given him everything he required, within his means. She had been nothing but civil and patient with him, and yet was still unable to win him over. She recalled a time, when a mere glance would entice him to her bed.
Her secret visits to him had proved uneventful, and fruitless. Even the promise to remove the barrier, during their conversations, had failed to loosen his tongue. However, she lately noticed a difference in his demeanour. There was an air of duty about himâslight, though enough to provoke her thoughts. But time was pressing, and it grieved her to admitâshould desperation take its holdâthat Kara may have her way with the Warlock, after all.
Needs must! she thought. You will regret your silence, Oran!
The long, narrow hallway, leading to her solar chamber, stretched before her. Though well-lit, she knew herself capable of finding her way in the dark. She had chosen it with care, giving her the privacy, she required. The hallway led to a small passage, taking her to the steps leading up to her personal rooms, near the citadelâs keep.
In constant awareness of Wareeshtaâs lurking presence, she paused every few paces, glancing back over her shoulder.
She was still alone.
The large, oak-panelled door greeted her. Throwing one last cautious glance, she hesitated before inserting the key. Shut away from her aids, and the continuous sound of clashing blades, she sighed with relief on hearing the heavy door close behind her. However, she was still reeling at Karaâs suspicions, when she had ordered the Valkyrie to increase their training.
âHow dare you make enquiries!â she had snapped, before taking her leave of them. And, to make matters worse, she had sensed Wareeshtaâs reluctance to make use of her âgiftâ. It was all beginning to wear thin on her patience. As loyal as they were, there were times she was repelled by her aidsâand their company was not always sought.
Still, they have their uses, she reminded herself, until such time their services would be no longer required. But Wareeshtaâs gift had been her ally. Without it, she would not have her soldiers. Just a few more, she thought; then she would be prepared. Perhaps she would keep Wareeshta after all⦠when the real prize came into her possession. If forced to choose⦠the young, female Dhampir would be her favourite.
