But you really don't have to try to find experiences. They just arrive in your awareness. This can be a helpful exercise when you are experiencing overwhelm. If you find something that you don’t think belongs in the six categories above, make yourself a new category! The point is to be able to categorize and simplify your experiences.
Pedestrians
The better we get at noticing our thoughts, the better we get at noticing our passengers. After all, our passengers are just recurring patterns of thoughts and emotions.
But most thoughts don’t qualify as passengers. Most thoughts are just random and unobtrusive. Yet, they still occupy significant airtime in our consciousness, especially when we engage with them. Continuing with the passenger/driver metaphor, we can call our random and fleeting thoughts pedestrians. Pedestrians don’t require our attention or engagement, as passengers often do. Pedestrians aren’t in the car with us, so they aren’t as distracting as passengers. If we just notice them and keep driving, they disappear in the rearview mirror.
If we don’t notice them, however, we can end up thinking about their messages for a surprising amount of time. If you’ve ever caught yourself daydreaming in class or at work, you were probably listening to pedestrians, who can mentally take us to some weird places. If I tune into my pedestrians in this moment, here is the chatter I hear:
I wonder how many bicycles there are in the world. Probably a lot. Do most people know how to ride bikes? What if bikes could fly? That would be cool. What if I could fly? I wonder if flies know they can fly. If a fly is flying inside an airplane, does that airplane weigh more? I bet people from 200 years ago would be really freaked out by airplanes.
