When you talk to former executives about their time at Disney, they will often mention as a highlight the close friendships formed during their time at boot camp (I mean, Dimensions). It was thrilling to lead these programs where I witnessed firsthand the evolution of a group of fiercely independent, successful executives who begin the program each with their own agenda and preconceptions who, by the end of the week, form a team committed to their mutual success—and to each other.

A typical day included activities like a helicopter tour of Walt Disney World and a quick stop at each theme park, followed by participating in a finance meeting to examine numbers and priorities. (One year we wrapped up with a screening of Toy Story, which would premier thirty days later. So, there were some lighter moments in the program. And a point well made too: You’ve got a friend in me.) Make no mistake, this program was expensive, logistically challenging, and time consuming, but I received a valuable life lesson in the process: to know and understand is to appreciate and value. And this understanding of the wide reach of Disney, the depth of the talent within the company, and the height of our mutual challenges and opportunities added, just as promised, a whole new dimension to our collaborative efforts.
