Putting Others First – Action Points

Putting others first does not always come naturally. Understandably, as individuals, we are concerned about our own career progress, our own work, our own lives. We worry about how others view us, and whether we make a good impression.

At its worst, self-interest can dominate the way some people operate at work. Managers trample over their team members and other managers as they scramble for pole position in the race for promotion. They claim responsibility for the success of others, and may even bend the rules and behave unethically to achieve objectives and goals. This is the antithesis of sacrificial leadership.

Both collaboration and cooperation are increasingly important in the way that organizations achieve competitive advantage and meet their targets. Organizations get things done by great teams working together. For this to happen, people must frequently put the interests of others – their organization, business units, team members, team leaders, colleagues, customers – before their own. And it is the leaders in the organization that will need to set an example in doing so.

Setting the right example takes time. Farmer’s decide what crops to plant, prepare the land, sow the seeds, nurture the young shoots, feed the crops with water and nutrients, and only then reap a good harvest. We need to apply similar diligence and consideration to our relationships. Consistent behaviour over time makes the most difference.
