Leaning out of the cave mouth and checking for any signs of movement in the vicinity, Calene waved Greton out and into the day’s sun. It still held the chill of winter, but a hint of warmth touched its edges, a promise of spring to come.

They hopped across stones in the river, keeping their bodies as low to the water as they could. Trees covered the cave mouth, hiding it from view, allowing the Shining Cross to keep watch without being spotted themselves. Reports stated the Shadow Sparker lurked nearby, too close to be coincidence.

From the shelter, Calene scanned their surroundings once more, frowning. Nothing met her eyes, and the trickle of water filled her ears, unbroken by other sounds. Clear blue sky stretched in all directions above them.

“Come on,” she muttered, waving Greton forward. “Let’s take a look. If I didn’t know better, I’d think Maria just wanted us gone.”

“No, she would not do that. I believed her when she said we were assets. What purpose would getting rid of us serve the Shining Cross anyway?” Greton smiled as they moved forward side-by-side, the bow slung over one shoulder and the arrows filled with Zendilton poking over his other. “The Shadow Sparker is out here somewhere. The reports stated it.”

“What are you so happy about?” Calene asked, staring at him.

Greton came to a stop and spread his hands. “Being outside, Calene! It is so quiet, not like all the constant chattering inside the cave. All that hustle and bustle. No wonder I cannot sleep! But out here…” He gazed around, eyes twinkling in the daylight. “It is almost like no-one else exists. Well, except for that. You cannot really ignore that, can you?”

He pointed over Calene’s shoulder. She rounded, wondering if he’d spotted the Shadow Sparker or some other threat, then realised what he’d been gesturing at. Protector’s Watch loomed above them, rearing out of Protector’s Wall and dominating the flat lands around the mountain range in all directions.

“You know, I sometimes forget we’ve been living under one of Haltveldt’s largest cities these last six weeks.” Calene shook her head and turned away. Even though she put her back to it, her senses knew all too well the City of the Mountain hulked above her. It would watch her for many miles, no matter which direction she travelled. “Funny, isn’t it?”

“I do not find it amusing,” Greton replied, still focused on it. “It is a good thing that Janna filled the pass into the cavern with so many roots and collapsed as much of the stonework as possible, or we would have had soldiers descending upon us every day since.”

Calene rolled her eyes. “I didn’t mean funny as in ‘ha-ha’, I meant funny as in, ‘weird’.”

Greton had the bit between his teeth though, and Calene might as well have said nothing at all.

“I suppose we should move out soon, if Maria can be convinced of it. The river pass into the cavern is well hidden and can be defended, but if it were found, we would be trapped.
