Chapter Thirty-Four
Gabe’s head shot up from its rested position on the passenger side window of the rental car. His lips were wet. He could feel saliva run down out of the left corner of his mouth. For a moment, he thought it was remnants of Angela’s kisses. It took him only a moment to realize it was his own drool. Outside of the window was the beautiful green of the French country side. Where were they? He looked over to the driver’s side. Lauren looked right back to him with a concerned look on her face.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
“I’m…fine.”
Lauren then smiled. She pulled out a small packet of tissues from her pocket. “You need some of these?”
Gabe nodded and took them. He tore through the cheap, thin packaging and began to wipe at his mouth. “How long was I out?”
“A while,” she replied. Her eyes went to the clock on the dashboard of the tiny Fiat. “A good ten hours, I guess. You fell asleep on the job.”
Gabe grew angry with himself and squeezed hard on the used tissue. “It won’t happen again.”
“Relax, everything turned out okay.” Lauren replied. “I was able to get us a new rental car and everything while you were asleep.”
“Good thinking. We on our way to Paris now?” Gabe demanded.
“Not quite, first we have to get a permanent vehicle and then torch this one. Frost’s friend will have that ready for us. Then, yes, we will be on our way to Paris.”
“What’s the game plan from there?”
“We’ll sleep there tonight and then we have our meeting with the arms dealer first thing tomorrow morning. Then, we meet up with Frost.”
“You notice anybody tracking us?”
Lauren shook her head and minded how fast she was driving. She eased off the gas. “No, nobody. You really need to stop acting like I’m a rookie, you know that.”
“We just can’t afford any mistakes.”
“Again, I’d appreciate it if you stop treating me like a neophyte.” Lauren said. She then looked over to him with a raised eyebrow. “Or, should I give you another pill?”
Something inside Gabe snapped. “Or, go fuck yourself.”
Lauren frowned then turned her attention back to the road. No words were spoken until they reached their destination. Gabe folded his arms across his chest and fought back the urge to apologize. He didn’t know what had overcome him just now. It was another moment in which he felt he had no control over his own mind and actions. When would it end?
When the silence became too much for him, the blurs of the green countryside were enough to make him want to vomit, so he shut his eyes. The only thing that made sense to him came into his brain’s vision. Angela stood, wearing a black sundress, in the middle of an open field. Sunlight from the setting sun shined on her face and twinkled in her moist eyes. The longer Gabe stared, the more tarnished her dress became. Holes began to eat away at the fabric. Sores developed on her perfect skin and began to leak red crimson.
