Chapter Eleven

An hour after the delivery guys left, Virginia was still in her sweats and t-shirt discussing her unusual morning with Nicole on the phone.

“So you don't think the guy who installed your locks was a real locksmith,” Nicole said.

“He said he does work for the Serpents.”

“Right, he’s probably a safecracker.” Nicole joked.

Virginia laughed at her friend’s vivid imagination, but the thought had crossed her mind too. She just didn't want to say it out loud.

“The crazy thing is, he arranged all this at four in the morning when he apparently left my apartment. I was in such a sound sleep, I didn't even hear him leave.

“Fucked-dumb, huh?” Nicole teased.

Virginia regretted sharing that phrase with Nicole, especially since now she taunted her with it.

“The time isn’t that unusual,” Nicole said logically. “He probably contacted ‘Thugs-R-Us: open twenty-four hours.’” Nicole giggled at her little joke.

“I fail to see the humor in that.” Virginia used her chastising mother voice.

“Fine, but you have to see the humor in you going to a biker party later at a biker bar. Now that’s hilarious.”

“No, that’s scary. I have no idea what to wear or what to—”

“I’ll come over later and we’ll figure it all out. I’m assuming he's picking you up on his motorcycle?”

“Yes to the motorcycle and no to me needing help with an outfit.” The last thing she needed was Nicole picking out some outrageous combination of clothes.

“I’ll bring over a few of my things that might work. Oh, I can’t wait to see him up close and personal.”

“Did you hear the part where I said I don't need any help?”

“I heard you. I’m just choosing not to listen. Anyway, without my help you’ll go out wearing your usual black pants and white top. They’ll think you’re part of the waitstaff.”

“That’s completely inaccurate, sometimes I wear a beige top.”

Nicole blew a frustrated breath through the phone. “Like I said, half the time you look like you’re going to wait tables.”

Virginia’s mind flashed to Rattler’s comment about her wearing a server’s costume the first night she went to Ecstasy.

“All right, you can come over, but I’m not wearing anything outrageous, and you will be long gone before he gets here.”

“You are no fun at all,” Nicole grumbled.

An hour later, she’d showered and blown out her hair, and conceded to keep an open mind at whatever outfit Nicole had in mind.

Her phone buzzed and she groaned. Why did her father have the absolute worst timing?

“Hello.” She gripped the phone tighter than necessary.

“Virginia?”

“Yes.” The question in his voice confused her. Who was he expecting?

“I think it's time you come to your senses.”

“Dad, please let’s not do this again. I told you the last time I’m staying in Vegas at KLAS and you can do your worst—cut me off, never talk to me again—you can’t scare me into coming home.”

“It's you who's scaring me, Virginia.”

Great, now he was going to talk in riddles.

“Do you have any idea who you’ve been consorting with?” The indignation in his voice always amazed her.
