Is there something “outdated” about this thinking today? And is there not, therefore, an urgent need today to rediscover, before all else, the prophetic, uncomfortable, and audacious “irrelevance” of the liturgical movement in order to remain faithful to the reform and never forget its true meaning?

7. FIVE EXAMPLES TO CLARIFY THE CHALLENGES OF THE LITURGICAL MOVEMENT TODAY

We cannot conclude this historical and theoretical consideration of the intentions of Sacrosanctum Concilium without connecting the historical-theological theory to the liturgical-sacramental practice of the church. In this final section, I wish to offer some examples of the ways that Sacrosanctum Concilium’s recovery of the liturgy’s fundamental status as fons et culmen can impact our actual liturgical praxis.

It is often said, for example, that what was once a poverty for the Word of God in Catholic experience has been satisfied—perhaps too much. We now have—primarily in the eucharistic celebration but also in the celebration of the other sacraments—easier access to the Word with the help of the famous “missalette” or “worship aid.” And this certainly had a highly positive role following the Council in developing a new mentality. Then there is the more frequent possibility of receiving Communion under two forms. On a third level, we have a great deal more information on the ritual details of the sacraments, such as the eschatological meaning of being dressed in a white garment during the rite of baptism. We are strongly committed to a catechetical process for children that calls for the sacramental succession of baptism–first confession–first Communion–confirmation, and finally, among our pastoral concerns is the question of the place within the ecclesial community of those who are divorced and remarried.

These are five liturgical-pastoral experiences that seem clear enough on the surface. But within each one we find a powerful level of contradiction between the intentional dimension (the meaning) and the functional dimension (the sign/ritual symbol). I seek briefly to shed some light on these below.
