6. And Tonight

Celine pressed her fingers to the bridge of her nose. Inch thin televisions were arranged in rows three high and six across, each showing a different station along with some affiliate networks.

The man behind the desk was preened, an expensive wool suit she could imagine draped on well-to-do party-fiend from the 20s. That was almost 100 years ago, now. Time flew, and these past few years had been even faster. Everything was up in the air now. Nothing was certain.

Celine wondered how he afforded his clothes. She knew he wouldn’t be paid well, not as much as the “talent” that would be interviewing her. Working a desk in the waiting lounge and green rooms, responding to the needs of celebrities and fashionistas, this was probably an intern’s job, not salaried staff.

She contemplated being demanding but that would only cause strife for this young man. It would make no point in the producers’ minds. This was beneath her, but the show was watched by millions. The vampires needed support, impressionable minds’ support, and she couldn’t imagine any mind more impressionable than the kind that watched this drivel.

Cut crystal glasses surrounded a silver ice-bucket holding a bottle of San Pellegrino. The plague hadn’t hit this studio, there was certainly no financial fallout here. Not that Celine suffered a financial fallout, but she was certainly appreciative of what the rest of the world, the human world was going through.

She lifted the bottle from the ice and looked for something to dry off the dampness. They hadn’t thought of that, so she placed the bottle on the table, carefully avoiding her skirt.

“Ms. Francois will be with you soon,” the young man in the wool suit said.

Celine nodded, and smiled. He looked nervous, on edge. She took a glass from the diamond arrangement of ware on the table. Twisting open the cap Celine inhaled deeply along with the hiss of gas escaping the bottle. She had no time for food, but drinks were something she would never give up. Blood magic bought her the stomach for liquids, it was expensive to maintain but she had two centuries of investments behind her. And now she was reduced to shitty fashion shows that aired at the same time as the news, for people not interested in any broader version of the world.

She raised the glass to her face and could feel the bubbles burst into her nose, the little pops of carbonation twinkling against her nostrils as she took a mouthful of the water.

“We can drink,” she said. The intern was watching her. “Do you know much about vampires?”

“We’ve had a few guests,” he said. “Alisandro was here two months ago.”

“I wouldn’t envy anyone dealing with him.”

“He was adorable, he brought everyone cupcakes he baked himself. He said he couldn’t eat them but he loves to be in the kitchen.”

Celine smiled. If Alex, or Alisandro as he referred to himself now was bringing in food he baked she wondered what he had included in the mix.
