Chapter Eleven
Outside, Viv as usual pulls her jacket up round her chin. The temperature canât have got above zero today and the wind chill, whatever that is, means the cold bites her hard. Johnny motions towards Royal Terrace. He walks quickly and although her legs are longer than his she has to run a step, walk a step to keep up with him. In the small car the smell of its newness is overwhelming. Sheâs glad that heâs sensible and wasnât tempted to have âjust oneâ. The car starts first time.
âThanks, by the way. Itâs good of you to give me a lift.â
âIâm so shocked about Andrew. Are you absolutely sure? It couldnât be another mistake?â
âNo. I heard it through official channels.â
âWhat? Are you working with the cops?â
âWell, not officially. But they have asked me for the information Iâve got on whatâs going on at that flat. Have you any idea? Have you ever been there?â
âIâve been once. Wasnât my scene. The old guy who owns it is a good bloke.â
This is a surprise to her. âSandy?â
âYeah. He looks after people. There are tons of guys who make their way to Edinburgh thinking itâs the gay capital â and youâd think it was if you believed the pink mags. But the reality can be bleak. Accommodation is expensive, booze is expensive â everything is really. So they end up having to get work, and what could be easier than renting?â
Viv takes a second to get his meaning. âRent boys?â
âYeah. Renting your arse isnât that different to just giving it away night after night, which is what they end up doing. At least theyâve got a chance of a bed for the night. Maybe even breakfast if theyâre lucky.â
Viv canât help herself and interrupts. âYouâre a bit jaded, arenât you?â She waits, tempted to add âfor one so youngâ, but thatâll not win her any favours. âYouâre an intelligent bloke. Whatâs Lenâs part in this?â
âIâm not sure. But heâs rich and rough and straight.â
Viv turns in her seat. âChrist!â This is getting beyond curious. âStraight? Are you sure?â
âYeah, he runs the boys.â
âHeâs their pimp?â
âDonât know if thatâs what heâd call himself. But he gets them set up. Iâve never done it, so I donât really know. But Andrew . . .â
âWhat â he sold himself? I wouldnât have thought with his looks heâd have had to. I mean sugar daddies anâ all that.â
âHeâs got a habit . . . had a habit. And doesnât . . . didnât like older men. Not as straightforward as you think.â They sit in traffic at the top of Leith Walk waiting for the lights to change.
âOh, I donât think thereâs much about this case thatâs straightforward, but youâre right, I have made assumptions. So, Len? You sure he doesnât have a last name?â
âNo idea. Always just known him as Len. Iâve never spoken to him or anything. Tommy has, but he wouldnât do it for him. Thereâs so many who will. Len doesnât need to push anyone into it.
