Hecate

I have no idea where we’re going, but when Dylan stands up and offers me his hand, I’m not about to turn him down. He pulls me to my feet and we head back inside the enormous mansion. He pulls me down one of the halls until we come to an ornate staircase blocked off with a velvet rope.

“Do you trust me?” he asks, looking back at me with a grin.

“Yeah,” I say. I’m not sure why I do—we’ve only just met one another—but it’s true.

He ducks under the rope. “Come on,” he says. “I did some exploring before you got here.”

The rule-abiding good girl in me is scandalized at the idea of going somewhere where we’re obviously not allowed. At the same time, a not-insubstantial part of me thrills at the idea of breaking the rules with Dylan. I duck under the rope and follow him up the stairs. The smile he gives me over his shoulder is more than enough encouragement.

The stairs curve at the landing, and the second floor is only dimly lit with wall sconces. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a ghost step out from one of the shadows along the wall.

Good thing I have a big, strong Spartan soldier to protect me.

“This way,” Dylan says. He stops in front of a set of ornate French doors. I reach out to trace the carving on the door.

“What is this?”

“Open the door and take a look.”

I twist the knob and peek in. It’s a cozy study, the walls lined with books and the windows covered with heavy velvet drapes. The room is lit by several candelabra, and there’s a fire burning in the fireplace.

“We can’t stay in here,” I tell him. “Someone’s going to notice. There wouldn’t be a fire in here if someone wasn’t planning to use the room.”

“Every room in this hall has a fire lit,” he says. “I think it’s to maintain the heat in the house while minimizing the strain on the central furnace. If you’re worried, there’s a way to bar the door from the inside, and an exit on the other side of the room in case we need to make a quick getaway.”

I’m still not totally convinced that we won’t be interrupted.

“Come on, Hecate,” Dylan says, pulling me close and resting his forehead against mine. “It’s Halloween. Let’s get into a little trouble.”

And when he phrases it like that, how can I say no?

He grins and pulls me into the room, barring the door behind us. The candlelight in here is less spooky than it had been in the hallway; in the warm richness of the study, the dim lighting is sexy, not scary.

“Hey, gorgeous,” Dylan says, his arms going around me. One hand twists in my hair and the other slides down to my ass, cupping it and pulling me flush against him. I can feel that he’s already hard, and I moan as he captures my mouth in a searing kiss.

He breaks the kiss and ghosts his lips across my cheek until they’re brushing my ear.
