Chapter 22

It was dark when Vida got home, and for once she was grateful for the aromas that told her that Simon was home and concocting some kind of culinary marvel. The house smelled like roasting peppers and tomatoes, the warmth of a Tuscan summer enveloping her as soon as she shut the door to the February chill. She leaned heavily against the door for a minute, closing her eyes and breathing deep. If she'd found it tiring being out in the field yesterday, the horror of today had tripled that exhaustion. After her encounter with DI Slater and Myfanwy, she'd returned to her office and continued trawling through the texts she'd got from Maggie's friends and family, trying to add greater probabilities to the pretty much already certain. Jamie had turned up but had thankfully kept his thoughts to himself for the rest of the day and they had worked in companionable silence. They'd processed nearly all the texts and she felt like she was ready to report back to the Donaldsons. She just still wasn't sure exactly what she was going to say to them.

“V? Is that you?” Simon called.

“Yes.” She followed the smells into the kitchen, knocking the thermostat up a notch as she went to try and heat her bones through. Simon was sitting at the table, laptop in front of him, soup bubbling on the hob and what looked like fresh bread waiting to go into the oven sitting on the side. She slung her bag onto the chair and then sat down opposite him. He glanced up and smiled a welcome at her but seemed oblivious to her slumped shoulders and grey eyes.

“I've had the most amazing idea,” he said. “Check it out.”

He spun the laptop round to face her. On the screen was a picture of a dog. She looked at him questioningly.

“It's a dog.”

“I can see that,” she frowned. “I just don't see how this matches up to an amazing idea.”

“It's a Lagotto Romagnolo.”

“Are you sure that's not a car?”

He looked bemused for a moment. “No, that's a Bugatti. This is definitely a dog. Listen, I was thinking earlier about that truffle that I bought. I mean, that was expensive. And for what? A little lump of fungus. Don't get me wrong. I think it was worth it and you said about it bringing out the flavours but then I thought...what about hunting for my own truffles? These guys are experts in the field. Italian water dogs who've been retrained as truffle hunters. I rang a bloke earlier and he was telling me about all the spots that you can find truffles around Yorkshire. It's not as rare as you might think.”

Vida stared at him. She rubbed her forehead. “You want to get a dog?” Her tone conveyed disbelief and extreme disappointment. Simon failed to pick up on either.

“Yes, don't you think it's a great idea? We can get one of these little guys and then when I'm not working on my PhD.
