Love Hurts

When Clove sent that photo to the group, I couldn’t focus for several seconds before I realized I should probably respond. I couldn’t think of any word that would do her beauty justice. Stunning, was an understatement. Xave and I texted outside the group text.

Xave: WOW

JJ: I know right. Who knew she was that gorgeous?

Xave: I’m jealous that you’re there and not me.

JJ: Don’t be. I’ll catch u up later.

Around 7, I walk back down to Clove’s house eager to see her again. Both girls are waiting outside for me. Clove is wearing ripped jeans that stop above her ankles with a white tank top. Her face is covered with make-up like some of the girls at school. Her eyelashes look longer and her lips somewhat pouty. I think it’s too much, but I won’t dare tell her that. I don’t think she understood when I said she doesn’t have to compete. It’s her choice and if it makes her happy, I’m for it. I’m mildly disappointed she’s not wearing that yellow swimsuit though.

Rosario looks the same as when I saw her an hour ago. She’s cute but I can’t tear my eyes off of Clove.

Rosario tugs on the bottom of my shirt. “Is this a vintage Back to the Future tee?” she asks.

“Yes, it is.” This was one of the t-shirts that was donated to us. When I saw it in the pile, I was way too excited.

“I love Back to the Future,” Rosario tells me. “We should watch it together, sometime.”

“Uhhhh…” Is she trying to ask me out? I focus my attention back on Clove but she’s picking with her nails. “Are y’all ready?”

“Yes,” Rosario answers. “JJ, you can sit up front with me.”

JJ? Hmmm, so Clove’s been talking about me.

Regardless of Rosario’s invitation, I open the front passenger door for Clove, allowing her to sit in front.

“Thank you,” she says.

“You’re welcome.”
