UNDERSTANDING HOW MINDFULNESS affects sexual desire in women means that we need to look a little closer at how mindfulness affects the brain. After all, the brain truly is the most powerful sex organ, and a powerful physical sexual response cannot compensate for a disengaged brain when it comes to enjoying sex.

We have considered some of the different mechanisms that may explain why mindfulness improves sexual desire, and I would argue that if mindfulness is to have a longstanding effect on sexual functioning for women, there needs to be evidence that it affects the brain in those areas that are directly involved in sexual desire. Although only a few studies of brain imaging have been carried out in women with low sexual desire, there is evidence for differences in brain activity between those who complain of low sexual desire and those who do not. For instance, in a study looking at functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in women with clinically significant low sexual desire, the women with low desire were found to have less brain activation in the occipital cortex and the middle occipital gyrus than those in a control group. They also had more activation in the left inferior parietal lobe, the medial frontal gyrus, and the basal ganglia. (See Figure 2.)
