Level One Challenges: The Little Things
Level one challenges are the smaller trials, the little things that happen in daily life. For example, your cat flips out and scratches his arms or his favorite dry cleaner ruins your expensive shirt. These things won't kill you, but they introduce a lot of stress into your partnership. If you don't learn to deal with level one challenges effectively, they will act like little pins needling their way between the two of you. They might seem harmless at first, but the way you tackle them together is important because they never go away Daily life will certainly never be challenge-free. Take some time to think about the problems and annoyances you face daily and how you deal with them when you're together. Can your relationship survive these little stresses?
Household Issues
Case 1: One evening you find several large black spiders in your bathroom and you call him in a panic. Does he come over and help you exterminate? Does he make you laugh by leaving a picture of Spiderman taped to the medicine cabinet? Or does he tell you he's pretty busy but he hopes you find the right bug spray at the grocery store?
Case 2: How about when his car breaks down—do you offer to drive him everywhere until he can get it fixed? Or do you send him a monthly bus pass, cross your fingers, and hope he makes it to work?
The Challenge: Frustrating things happen around the house all the time. The air-conditioning breaks in ninety-degree heat. The refrigerator quits the night before your dinner party. Do the two of you help each other through these stressful problems? You should feel like he's on your side and there to make life easier. You should want to be there to help him even when it's not convenient. These unexpected everyday problems are a true test of whether or not you support each other and you have to pass with flying colors for your relationship to thrive.
Driving
Case 1: You're still finishing up the six-hour car ride that should have been only three. You've been taking turns reading maps, getting lost, and asking scary gas station attendants for help. You've pulled over at least a half-dozen times to yell at each other. Do you end up staying at an eerie motel because communication broke down or do you work together to get to your destination? Do you blame him for the fact that you got lost or do you feel bad that he was stuck behind the wheel all that time?
Case 2: The traffic is unbearable, the sun is hot, and you're stuck together in a motionless line of tractor trailers. You're late for your parents' wedding anniversary party and supposed to give the opening speech. Do you start yelling at each other and become irrational or do you research other routes you can take to get there? Do you flip out because no one knows you're going to be late or does he jump
