Chapter Thirty-Seven

Sunday, 5:20 am

I had explained to Bell what Jacob, and I were going to do. I didn’t think she needed to tell Bill or Ellen. I didn’t want either of them to worry. Bell had packed a small breakfast for us and as soon as Jacob showed up, we went out to his Ram 2500 truck.

“Where are we going Eric?” Jacob asked.

“You know where Denny Quill died from the rockslide?” I asked.

“Yeah. Up on the old dirt road up north a bit. Dad gave him permission to use the road anytime he wanted. But why are we going up there?”

“I have a hunch his death was not an accident. In fact, I don’t think Carla Benson’s was an accident either.”

“But how can that be? I heard Carla ran a red light.”

“And I heard from Detective Saunders, there was surveillance showing the driver of the semi had a green light. But whether or not Carla’s light was red, has not been proven.”

“How would someone deliberately get both lights to show green at the same time? And how would they know Carla would even get hit?”

“Good questions and I don’t have the answer yet. But we can climb up to where the rockslide started and see if there is any evidence it wasn’t natural.”

Jacob grabbed a few items from the back of his truck, including two large backpacks and put them into the back seat. He carried one into the house and then we headed out.

As we drove I thought there had to be something up on the mountain. But I wasn’t very experienced in determining a natural or unnatural rockslide. Which was why I brought Jacob. One of his hobbies was free climbing and I hoped he would know what to look for.

“So, how is Ben?” Jacob asked.

“I think he is okay, handling seeing Greg Talbot die,” I answered. “But it’s possible he will have some problems dealing down the road. Nightmares and other effects. I hope he doesn’t but in any case, we will be there for him.”

“I think he is one tough kid.”

“Me too.”

“Has Dad and Bear come back from the big roundup?”

“Bill and he were going to sleep out under the stars last night. I’m sure he is having a terrific time. They should be back sometime today.”

“Lucky kid. I still remember my first roundup Dad took me on. It was tough but it made me feel like a man. I think I was about the same age as Bear.”

“I bet you were also twice his size.”

“Maybe three times,” he said and laughed.

We drove a road different from the one we had come up when the rockslide happened.

“This isn’t the way we came up last time,” I said.

“There are two roads going up and they both cross right where Denny was killed,” Jacob said. “But this one goes up higher and it will leave us closer to where the rocks came from. At least I think so. Haven’t been up here in some time.”

We crested a ridge and Jacob pulled the car over.
