Chapter Nineteen
âThis wonât take long,â Harry said to the man now standing with him, Matt and Jim. âSorry to take you away from your family. This must be hard for you all.â
âHard? Itâs bloody horrible is what it is,â the man said. âNot every day you wake up to find a body on your land, you know. Youâre not all going to ask me lots of questions, are you? I donât do well with questions.â
Harry attempted a smile, despite the fact that he knew it generally made his face look worse. âPCSO Metcalf will just take notes, wonât you, Jim?â
Jim gave a nod, brandishing his notebook and pencil.
âAnd Detective Constable Dinsdale and I just want to get an idea of what you found, thatâs all. Then if you can pop down to the office in Hawes later on today and give a statement, that would be very much appreciated.â
âIâm not due to go to Hawes today, though,â the man said. âMartâs not on, is it? And thereâs nowt Iâm wanting from the supplies shop.â
âSupplies shop?â Harry asked.
âItâs like a supermarket for farmers,â Matt explained. âImagine a place where you can buy anything from a chainsaw to chicken feed. Worth a look if you get a chance.â
âI donât have much need for either of those,â Harry said.
âCome on, everyone needs a chainsaw,â Matt said.
Harry looked back to the farmer. âI didnât catch your name.â
âI didnât give it.â
âCome on, Pat,â Jim said. âWeâre here to help, you know that.â
Harry caught a look between Jim and the farmer, who then seemed to relax a little.
âSorry,â he said. âItâs just that itâs set me off a bit, if you know what I mean? Iâm Pat. Patrick Coates.â
Harry recognised the name. âIsnât Liz a Coates?â He asked, looking at Matt and Jim.
âProbably a very, very, very distant relative,â Matt said. âThereâs names around here that have been around for centuries, Dinsdale, Metcalf, Coates, to name a few.â
Harry pondered on this briefly, then was back to Pat. âSo, Pat,â he said, âif you could just run through what happened, that would be really helpful. And donât worry if you think the details arenât important, thatâs for us to decide, okay?â
Pat took a deep breath then started to talk, his thick, Yorkshire accent dancing around his words like children around a maypole. âWell, I was up at five,â he said. âBit early for me, to be honest, but there we are. Got up anyway and decided I may as well just head on out and do something with my time. No point lying around in bed, is there?â
Harry wasnât exactly of the same opinion and asked, âWhy were you up so early, then?â
Pat shrugged. âI think it was a fox that woke me. Heard a scrabbling sound outside. Thatâs why I went out, really. They canât half scare the animals. And little Gracie, sheâs my youngest, sheâs got these two rabbits you see, and thatâs a tasty meal for any fox for sure, and I canât be doing with seeing her all upset.
