CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Beau Rochester
Paige dips a fish stick into ketchup and peers across the table at me. In the scheme of things, not much happened today. I met with the prosecutor. I took a statement from Emily and had it printed at the public library. I came home and was generally useless while Jane worked on schoolwork with Paige. I tried to help with a few of the problems, but Paige didnât want my input. Janeâs is better.
Nothing much happened, but Iâm as worn as if Iâd spent all day on a fishing boat. If I didnât know better, Iâd think I had a sunburn. My skin is on fire with Janeâs proximity and how tenuous everything is. She came back to my bed, and back to my arms.
It would be simple for her with another man. She wouldnât be wary of him sending her away. He wouldnât be foolish enough to do it in the first place.
The situation with Emily hangs over the table. I told Jane last night weâd figure it out in the morning, and then I left her sleeping. The truth is that I donât want to talk about it. I donât want to talk about Emily. I donât want to watch Janeâs eyes darken when she remembers how I sent her away. I want to take her to bed and make her forget.
Jane meets my eyes and smiles.
It tugs at some soft, hidden part of me. After everything thatâs happened, thereâs still innocence in her smile. A sense of hope. Itâs always been there. Drew me to her the very first night we met.
I donât know any way to figure this out that doesnât end up hurting her. Or me. Or both of us. Thatâs why part of me wishes I didnât need her so much. She doesnât deserve to weather this with me.
âMy sandcastle had four towers.â Paige has the air of a person who feels a little sorry for anyone with a lower-quality sandcastle. âNext time, Iâm doing eight.â
âAre you going to put hotels in all of them?â Itâs a Monopoly reference.
She takes a bite of her fish stick and narrows her eyes at me while she chews it. A sign that sheâs thinking about what I said and probably finding several flaws with it. âThere wouldnât be enough room for hotels in those towers.â
âImaginary hotels, maybe.â
Paige adds another pool of ketchup to her plate. âThe guy at the beach didnât notice the towers. He was too busy being mad at Jane.â
My blood freezes. Janeâs hands tighten around her mug. âMad at Jane for what?â
âI thought we could talk about it after dinner.â Janeâs voice is soft, but itâs steady. Her tone holds a warning. Weâre not going to discuss it now.
âFor not visiting.â Paige tips her head back and drops the last bite of fish stick into her mouth. âIâm going to finish my drawing.â
âFive minutes,â Jane calls after her. âThen itâs bath time.â
âWho the hell was mad at you at the beach?â
âNoah came to see me.
