Because it’s hard for me to dial with my hand shaking, Laurie calls Pete and then 911 to report what has happened.

Laurie has confirmed that Lefty is dead; she nailed him in the chest with one shot in the dark, desperately trying to do so in a split second before he could shoot Marcus. It was a remarkable feat.

That’s my girl.

The guy that Marcus rammed into the garage wall has come to, and Laurie has placed him in handcuffs. That she had handcuffs in the house all this time but never shared that information with me is interesting in itself, but a subject for another time.

Some neighbors are cautiously gathering at the end of our driveway, having heard the shot. I call out to them that there’s nothing to see here, a statement that is rendered ridiculous when three police cars, lights flashing, pull up.

Corey also arrives; I guess Laurie must have called him as well. Between him and Laurie they know a few of the cops, which enables those cops to tell the good guys from the bad guys.

An ambulance shows up, and they provide treatment of some sort for the garage-wall guy. They have no trouble determining that treatment on Lefty is not called for, and I’m sure the coroner’s van will be here soon.

It’s a big day in the neighborhood.

Pete arrives with two of his homicide detectives, though no homicide has been committed. He’s all-business, asking a series of questions that get me to describe exactly what happened, with Laurie and Marcus standing there to correct me if I miss anything.

When I’m finished, Pete asks, “So Laurie shot that one and Marcus took care of that one, while you just stood there pissing in your pants?”

I nod. “That pretty much sums it up, yes.”

“Do you know who they are?”

“You’d have to compare their IDs, which I assume are fake, with their travel records flying in from Detroit, but—”

“How do you know they flew in from Detroit?”

I’m not about to tell him that; it would mean throwing Sam under the bus. “I investigated; you should try it sometime.” Then, “As I was about to say, I believe very strongly they are two of the three associates of Drew Churasick, who I warned you about.”

Pete turns to Laurie. “You agree with everything this pain in the ass just said?”

She nods. “I do.”

Pete then turns back to me. “What were these two guys doing here?”

“Planning to kill me.”

“Why would they do that, other than the fact that you’re annoying and obnoxious?”

“Because they think I am making progress toward finding the real killer of Oliva and Theresa Minardo. And their ultimate boss doesn’t want that to happen.”

“Who’s their ultimate boss?”

“Jerry Conti.”

I can see Pete react in surprise; obviously he knows who Conti is. “These guys work for Jerry Conti?”

“Technically they probably work for Churasick, who then works for Conti. We think Conti is trying to move in here. He’s probably picked this area because the homicide cops are incompetent.”

“Boys, boys…,” Laurie says.
