Oxford after dark, on an early autumn evening, took on the look it had worn a hundred, two hundred—in places six hundred—years ago. Old-fashioned streetlamps in antique cast-iron frames cast gleaming glances along shadowy streets. Gothic windows peered darkly or with a lemony light.
