Paul is focused on Ber and the doctor as they disappear into the hallway to prepare for her outing. “There’s more,” he says quietly.

As I expected. “What is it?” I ask, mimicking his volume so our voices don’t carry.

“Your man at the village has fled to the coast.”

“Gerald Vita.”

Paul nods.

“It shouldn’t surprise me.” Gerald, a local, came to us as a young man. Due to malnutrition, his body had not grown to full potential, and his time here had passed. The very hunger that drove him here had fostered greed in his nature. I chose to bring him into the circle, knowing there would be a time where he could be useful.

“He didn’t strike me as the dependable sort,” Paul murmurs.

“No.” I hold his gaze. Paul has been part of the household for half my life. He’s been privy to Faust’s thoughts and decisions since before my time. And he has always been faithful to our beliefs. “I sent him to the village and got him away from my people. His ambition wouldn’t allow the opportunity to have a leader’s position slip by. Even if that role was a tiny village nobody recognizes.”

“A wise decision,” Paul acknowledges.

I run a hand down my arm, over the reminder I took from my time there. The town, as it was back then, has been part of my nightmares for the better part of my life. It was thriving, with many more people than Faust has now. The burgeoning product of a successful partnership that ultimately ended in ruin.

“He took a woman with him, but the details are muddy,” Paul adds, concerned.

“What do you mean?”

He presses his lips together so hard while gathering his thoughts, they turn into a white slash. “In the excitement, the men did not get clear details.” He takes a breath. “It was one woman then it was two. It was a local girl or one they didn’t know about.”

That catches my attention. “Could it be her?”

Paul lowers his head. “I could not say. Was it someone the driver didn’t know about, or the villager didn’t know about? It is not clear.”

I clench my jaw. I had hoped to keep news of Brianna’s disappearance confined within the walls. While the doctor has been loyal to this point, her animosity toward Ber has mellowed. Perhaps the time away from each other did what it was meant to.

“I’ll have the men question the locals. Faust will have correct information upon their return.”

“No.” Pulling them from their task could prove to be detrimental. “Have Jonah make discrete inquiries. We don’t want to start a rumor that will run rampant through the area, making us look weak.”

“Very well.”

“And find out who else passed through the village yesterday.” There’s one more way I can get information. Something I seldom do. “Once the doctor leaves, I’ll check the satellite phone. I have a feeling Gerald will be reaching out.” Because, as I always expected, Gerald’s greed will be his downfall.
