Chapter Six

“Ben, get your lazy ass out of bed!” a deep, masculine voice boomed.

Jerking awake, the bright light streaming through my bedroom window hit me full-force in the face, causing me to wince.

“What the hell?” When my eyes finally adjusted, I saw my dad standing in the doorway with an irritated expression. “It’s Saturday. I’m allowed to sleep, ya know.”

“Don’t you sass me, boy. Now get up.” Without another word, he swiftly turned around and walked away.

“Jerk,” I mumbled and lifted off the blanket, sliding out of bed. Memories from the past week came flooding back to me, making my previous irritation wane.

Nick.

Just thinking about the guy had my stomach in those weird knots again. He was the first person I thought of right when I woke up each morning. That previous week at school had been great—and that was a lot coming from me. We’d talked in between classes, at lunch, and I’d started driving him home in the afternoon. Then, we’d text all evening and into the early hours of the morning.

He just made everything better, and since I’d started talking to him, I hadn’t had any suicide dreams. It was as if my subconscious had no reason to shove all those depressing as hell thoughts into my face anymore because I finally had someone who accepted me for me. Someone who made me look forward to the day instead of dreading it.

Grabbing my phone, I clicked it on and smiled when I saw a Good morning text from him. There were like a million smiley emoticons following the words. It was so Nick.

Working my fingers, I sent back a reply. Mornin’, cutie. Anything planned for today?

About a minute later, my phone dinged. I was hoping to see you. But if you have plans, that’s cool. That time, he put a winking emoticon followed by one wearing a halo.

I smiled as I read his text and then texted, I don’t have anything planned. Seeing you would be great.

“Benjamin! Downstairs. Now,” my mom called.

What the hell do they want?

Irritated, I slipped on a discarded pair of jeans from the night before and trudged downstairs. Entering the living room, I spotted a few bags near the front door. My mom stood by the window with her arms crossed and my dad was on the other side of the room, tinkering with a glass figurine on the mantle.

“Umm, what’s goin’ on?”

“Your father,” Mom snapped and pinned a murderous glare at my dad, “has decided that he’s movin’ out. To be with his new girlfriend, I’m sure.”

“Oh, don’t you bring Caroline into this. This has nothing to do with her and everything to do with you.”

“Me? Me!” My mom balled her hands into fists and started charging toward my dad.

“Hey!” At my exclamation, both of them snapped their heads to look at me. “Enough. I’m sick of hearin’ you guys fight like cats and dogs all the damn time. Dad,” I turned my head to him, “if you want to leave us so bad, there’s the door, don’t let it hit you in the ass on the way out.
