Chase

There was a moment when I woke up that I didn't know where I was.

I was so used to waking up on the cold, hard floor of the prison, feeling the chains and the metal of the shackles weighing me down, that having my head against something soft and warm and being wrapped in strong arms was very disorienting.

I frowned, opening my eyes slowly, and the events of the last day came back to me.

We'd escaped. We were both alive, and Milo was in my house.

He was in my nest.

And I was in his arms.

My head was pillowed against his chest, and I could feel the strong beat of his heart and the easy, even pattern of his breathing.

He looked softer while he was sleeping, less like the murderous asshole prince I knew he could be, and clearly, I'd let my guard down.

We'd had sex the night before, and I was still sore and loose from it, and even though it had been very good, I wanted to kick myself.

I was getting distracted. I was getting too comfortable around this man.

He was the enemy, one of the ones we'd been fighting against for so long, and I needed to get my head on straight.

I'd been out of commission, and I needed to check on the rest of the Havocs. I needed to see what had been going on in my absence.

I needed to let them know I was back and ready to give the cause my all again.

That was what mattered.

I pulled myself out of Milo's arms and sighed softly, rolling out of his grasp and onto my feet so I could get dressed for the day. As comfortable as I had been, I had other priorities.

I stood up and stretched, gearing myself up to start the day, but then stopped when I noticed the blood.

My fingertips were smeared with a light, familiar coat of red, and I blinked at it. “What the…” I looked down and noticed a larger, brighter stain bleeding through my pajama pants and started to panic.

"Are you okay?" Milo's voice was insistent behind me as he shot up in the bed. He probably didn’t even know why, but I knew he could feel my panic, and it irritated me as much as it moved me.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, reaching for me. "What happened?" His voice grew more urgent as he noticed the blood.

"I don't know," I said, pulling away. "I just woke up, and I was bleeding."

A hard wave of nausea hit, and I nearly fell back onto the bed.

"We have to take you to a hospital," Milo said, squeezing my hand.

I moved away from him, taking myself out of his reach. He was getting too comfortable with touching me. Or I was getting too comfortable with his touch. Either way, I needed distance.

"We can't go to a fucking hospital, Milo," I snapped. "One, we're on the run. If we show up at a hospital, they'll know immediately who we are and tell your father.
