The Value of “Pin High”

One big, understated difference between professionals and the average or even good amateurs is the fact that professionals hit a very high percentage of their approach shots pin high or close to it, while the amateurs come up a club or more short most of the time.

This difference can account for as many as 8 to 10 strokes per round in scoring.

One reason for this is that most amateurs overestimate how far they hit their clubs, and another reason is that the professionals hit their shots more consistently solidly. Pros know that most greens are just a bit elevated, many times very subtly and cleverly disguised by the designer, and though the distance may measure 150 yards the shot actually plays closer to 160. Next time you play, keep stats on how many times your approach shot comes up short and you’ll be surprised at the high percentage. It can add up to several strokes per round that could be saved simply by taking a half to a full club more on your approach shots.
