Bella looked up slowly. At the shadow, at the mountain.

‘AHOY THERE!’ it said again.

Because it wasn’t a mountain.

An enormous ship was looming over them. It was the kind you see in the movies, steaming out of the harbour as thousands of people line its decks, throwing streamers and waving.

There were no streamers on this one, but there were definitely people on the decks. Bella’s eyes widened. How many decks? Two, three, four …

This was why the house had been moving, she realised. Not because it had changed its mind and decided to head for home, but because of the waves this gigantic ship had stirred up around it.

The ship was stopped now, settled on the water nearby – far enough that it wouldn’t bump into them but close enough that Bella could make out people’s faces, some smiling, others puzzled, all pressing forward for a better look.
