The human mind is a thing of complexity. It is neither matter nor nothingness. It occupies some space in between.
Sara's episodes highlighted this gap. I wanted to dismiss this as a post-fugue mania. I could label her bipolar, send her to Bangor, give her a mood stabilizer, and say there was nothing more I could do.
But that would only be partly true. Her behavior was not typical of someone with bipolar disorder. Mania didn't occur in short bursts, and people were usually disorganized. Sara had none of those features. And manic people certainly didn't know other peopleâs secrets.
I was driving home from the hospital when the phone rang. Rosalie was calling from the hospital.
"Hi, Gus."
"You worked her up already?"
"Yup. I even repeated a scan like you asked for. Normal. Bloodwork is fine too. She's a bit dehydrated, but I gave her a liter of fluid so she's fine now."
"Did the radiologist have a second look?"
"I even sent it to a colleague at Mass General. It's normal," she said. "Gus, I think she's unwell. We should send her."
"Does she want to go?"
Rosalie hesitated. "She wants to go home. Look, I know that itâs not your thing, so if you want, I can certify her. I'll be the bad guy."
I thought of Ernie Weagle, an experienced law enforcement officer who saw many mentally ill people at their worst. But he saw something different. So did I.
"Send her home."
"Gus, I don't-"
"We just need a bit more time with her. I think she's close to a breakthrough."
Rosalie exhaled into the phone.
"Trust me."
I hung up, then drove over to the shoulder of the highway and parked my truck. I lifted my phone and searched through my contacts until I had the one I was looking for. I needed to understand more about Sara. She didn't remember her own history, and hypnosis had been a failure.
"Hello?"
"Jacob, it's Gus. We metâ"
"Of course I remember you, Gus."
"I'm sure your brother has updated you."
"Gus, he's just trying to do the right thing. The way he goes about it isn't always..."
"I want him to stop following me. And her."
"You came to me," Jacob said. "She belongs with us. We want her home."
"I'm not convinced itâs safe for her."
"It's safe.â
"Not after what I saw with Zeke," I said. "I want to meet with you, Jacob. Alone. No Zeke, no anyone."
