Pretty Fly

Once I left the Olympic village I headed back to Leeds to have a celebratory dinner with my family. I’d love to say we all got dressed up and went to some really posh restaurant, but we went to Nando’s and it was perfect.

I couldn’t believe the reaction I got after 2012. I did so many interviews, it was non-stop. I was driving back and forth to London and I was still boxing and training as much as possible, so things got so busy I barely saw my family. I thought maybe I’d get a bit of attention following the win, but I was not expecting what came my way. I remember thinking that I’d still be able to go to the supermarket and do my shopping, like I always had, but even getting a pint of milk would take half an hour and, one day when I went to the supermarket, I had to ditch my trolley and security had to help me out of the store. Things have settled down, but I’m more mindful now and I’ll either go to a twenty-four-hour supermarket at about 2 a.m., or I shop online.

I’ve never done the whole VIP thing on a night out, but suddenly I found that when I went clubbing I had to go into private sections so I could get some space to see my friends. It was very different, not being able to just roam around a club. I never thought I’d be the kind of person to use a VIP area, but I do understand now why clubs have them. I get that it can just be easier, and it’s not all about getting the chance to pose and think you’re really important. I’m sure there is an element of that with some people, but I do it purely so I can chill with my friends for a bit. If there’s a big group of us going out, sometimes we’ll even call a venue up and see if they can sort out an area for us. When people are drunk, it magnifies everything and there’s no filter, so people don’t just want a selfie, they want to talk to you for ages and ask loads of questions and take a hundred photos. That’s totally cool until you realize you’ve been in a place for three hours and you haven’t had a chance to get a drink. I suppose it’s just about being sensible and trying to live as normal a life as possible. I haven’t gone as far as taking bodyguards out or anything – I think that’s a bit extreme. I’ve never had anyone trying to fight me after a few drinks either, thankfully. I think it tends to happen more with the boys. I know some male boxers it’s happened to.
