Be ready to correct a crooked response. If the hindquarters swing right, use your right leg at or behind the cinch. If the head veers to the left, straighten with right rein.

EXERCISE 7

Walk — Jog — Walk

• Walk from halt.

• Walk corner.

• Walk straight.

• Jog 25 feet.

• Walk 1–2 strides.

• Jog 25 feet.

• Walk 1–2 strides.

• Jog.

• Jog around the corner, letting the horse rise into the outside rein.

• When straight, walk.

• Halt.

• Repeat in opposite direction.

At first, perform only one set of transitions per long side, then increase to two and three.

This is the simplest and best exercise for elementary collection. You will feel the horse come up in front and start to lift his back.

With this exercise, you will be able to assess and develop straightness because you will be applying bilateral aids: seat, legs, and rein.

Most horses begin to flex at the lower jaw and poll, work the bit, and slather.

Beware of doing this exercise before a horse has learned how to move actively forward. A horse must know how to reach well underneath himself with his hind legs before he is collected. If a horse starts to get bunched-up or antsy from this type of exercise, immediately move into a brisk jog.
