“Fight him off!”

Gemma wedged an arm between her body and the throat of the vampire above her. That split second of reprieve was enough to hear the words shouted at her, understand where they came from, and send a spike of horror jolting through her.

Annalise.

Annalise was there. Ordering her to fight. As if she had any idea what that entailed. She was more likely to break her hand than do any sort of damage to the beast snapping at her neck.

She bucked with every last ounce of strength she could muster, and it did nothing. Absolutely nothing. The vampire had pounds and pounds on her. Topped her by inches. Knew exactly how to use all the unnatural strength of the undead. She was nothing against that sort of power.

Against him, she was dead.

Horror surged to life when the beast reared back. She recognized that face. The eyes were oddly vacant, but that mouth had whispered taunts in her ears.

He’d killed Mary Josella. Now he was here to finish her off.

His fangs still could quite reach, but there wasn’t any need for that to kill her. Not when her own body would do the job for him. His weight squeezed the breath from her lungs, the arm he leaned against prevented her from taking another. Black spots danced along her eyes and she pushed and pushed and pushed, desperate to do something, anything, to hold back the darkness crowding around her.

There was a bright, blinding flash. Then a pained scream.

The pressure on her throat disappeared. Gemma gulped down air as she rolled to her stomach and tried to crawl away, but the relief coursing through her was far too brief.

The vampire shot to his feet. Vacant, deadly eyes roved over her face before zeroing in on the vein throbbing along her neck.

Gemma forced herself to her feet. Backed away a step. The vampire cocked his head and ran his tongue over one of his fangs.

Over his shoulder, she spotted Annalise. The woman was armed to the teeth. She had the training and the weapons to end this, but she didn’t move a muscle. She simply stood there, watching the last moments of her damned life as if it were a show.

Gemma took another step back. No help from Annalise. No Soren rounding the corner to get her out of the latest pile of shit. She was on her own.

The vampire’s fingers twitched a second before he exploded into motion.

Gemma twisted at the last second. Air brushed past her with the vampire’s lunge, the soft puff making her skin crawl. She didn’t give it a second thought as she bolted for the still-open door of the storage closet. The door was thick and sturdy. With enough boxes toppled in front, she could maybe hold out long enough for help to arrive.

Soren wouldn’t leave her to face this alone. He’d be back, she just needed to survive long enough for him to get to her.

She was hit from the side again, but they didn’t go down.
