Before I had even opened my eyes, I could feel my brain pounding against the sides of my skull. It felt as if someone had cracked my head against the trunk of a solid oak tree.

I tried to peel open my eyes, but the bright light of morning seemed to be piercing through the tent worse than usual. It must have been an exceptionally sunny day outside.

It wasn’t until I felt the hard ground beneath me, that I realized I wasn’t in my bed—or even inside my tent—at all.

I forced myself to open my eyes, even though the brightness compounded with my already unbearable headache, and I looked around to see where I was. As soon as I saw the thick iron bars encasing me, I knew that I was inside the cage at the back of the territory.

I stood up so quickly that it made my head spin and I had to reach out for a bar to hold to steady myself. Sitting beside the cage, just far enough outside my reach that I couldn’t grab her—was Leander.

“What are you doing?” I hollered furiously at him. “How did I get in here?”

“See, now this was the reason I told Harlow it would be better for me to be the one to be here when you first woke up. I knew you’d be testy.”

“Let me out of here now!”

“No.”

Leander’s calm and unaffected tone enragedme even more.

“Who put me in this thing?” I asked, wanting to know exactly who I should kill the moment I got out of here. “Was it you?”

“Partially, yes. Harlow spiked your wine and once you passed out, the four of us all carried you here to the cage and locked it tight.”

“Bad move,” I snarled as I shifted into my dark wolf form and thrashed my claws against the bars.

I had thought for sure that a form as powerful as this would have been able to crush the bars of this cage with ease. But no matter how much I tried to break the bars or push the top of the cage off with my massive shoulders, the cage didn’t budge. When I had exhausted myself trying, I shifted back into human form to argue with Leander more. It was difficult to disguise how defeated I felt—the dark wolf, caged. That was the second blow to my power in less than two days’ time. First Tajia, and now this.

“That cage won’t break,” Leander said as he sat on the ground looking at me. “I’m pretty sure that it was made to hold something like you.”

“Why did you put me in here? Why did all of you do this to me?” I growled.

“I’m not going to answer that question,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because I’m going to let you wait for Harlow to answer it instead.”

Leander stood up to leave.

“Wait! I’m not done talking to you.”

He didn’t even bother to turn around. It was as if no one felt they had to listen to me anymore. I was alpha, and the dark wolf, and yet they caged me and turned their backs on me as if I was a common dog.
