Chapter 19

The door to the library swung open, and four distinct sets of footsteps walked in together, side by side. Lazyscales could hear them from his perch atop a lectern, but his view was blocked by Lasthope and Starseeker’s sides. The two elder dragons had been chatting idly about the physics of astral space, but suddenly they both whipped around. The abrupt motion was enough to startle the tiny Lazyscales.

“Goodness,” Starseeker mumbled, shaking her head. “That is not a sight you see every day. Welcome to the library. I am Starseeker. Please mind the books while you are here.”

“I didn’t think I’d be seeing them again any time soon,” Lasthope admitted, shaking his head. Before Lazyscales had a chance to ask what was happening, the larger dragon scooped him off his perch and gently set him down on his head.

Lazyscales squeaked in surprise, once more seeing the world from high above. He blinked as he noticed two very familiar dragons walking through the library towards them. To his shock, he also recognized the pair of humans walking in between them. Brandon and Jeremy looked so small and fragile in this place built for dragons, but they still grinned up at him as they noticed him on Lasthope’s head.

“Well, this is new,” Moonshadow said, frowning down at the tiny Lazyscales. She pulled to a stop next to Lasthope and Starseeker and stood a bit taller than the red dragon. Lasthope had to turn his head up ever so slightly to meet her gaze, a fact that she clearly took pleasure in. She grinned devilishly, first at the larger dragon and then at the tiny one perched on his head. “You look adorable, by the way.”

“I’m not adorable!” Lazyscales squeaked. “I’m ferocious and fearsome!”

Rosethorn made a few gestures with her hands, which Moonshadow quickly interpreted as could have fooled me. Before Lazyscales could protest, the rose-gold dragon had plucked him off Lasthope’s head and was cradling him between her arms. She made a face down at him, and he crossed his arms indignantly and purposely looked away. That didn’t stop Rosethorn from tickling him under the chin, nor did it stop him from squeaking in delight.

“Ah, he’s not actually a hatchling,” Starseeker quickly said, taking the tiny Lazyscales from Rosethorn’s arms and setting him back down on Lasthope’s head. “Reminding him of his current shape seems to be a point of contention, too. Best not discuss it too much.”

The two humans shared a quick snort of laughter before Jeremy stepped forward and cleared his throat. “While we would love to hang around and talk about Babyscales up there—”

“I WILL RIP YOU APART IF YOU CALL ME BABYSCALES AGAIN!!” Lazyscales squeaked angrily, earning a snort of laughter from Lasthope.

“— we are actually on a bit of a schedule. We managed to extract information about Lewis’s location from Lambton, and…” Jeremy’s words caught in his throat and his fists tightened.

“It is bad, I assume?” Lasthope said in a quiet voice.

“Does the name Tartarus mean anything to you?” Moonshadow asked.
