ELEVEN.

“What are we going to do, Abdi?” Alva asked. She was sitting with her back against a tree trunk. She wasn’t complaining, and there were no tears in her eyes as she asked the question. She simply wanted to know the plan.

“We can wait here, then go back to the house in the morning and see if they’ve moved on.”

“I wish I was good at climbing trees. Then I could climb to the very top and hide. It’s scary waiting here.”

“I’ll make us a den to hide in. Want to give me a hand?”

“Yes,” Alva replied, sounding determined. I asked her to fetch twigs and branches, but not so far into the forest that she couldn’t see me anymore. Alva carefully placed the doll against the tree and managed to gather a little pile of sticks before losing interest.

“I want to do something else,” she sighed.

“Do you want to sort something out for us to eat?”

She inhaled slowly, then exhaled with a snort: “OOOOOOK.”

“I’m busy making the den, so you’ll need to deal with it yourself,” I said, passing her the bag.
