The knock on the door came much faster than Arthur expected but it caused him to smile to himself.

Good girl, he thought, sauntering to answer it. He felt the newly familiar sense of arousal fire through him and for a moment, he stopped to pull himself together. Whatever he had with Lucinda, he was sure he’d never known anything close to it.

Has anyone ever felt that good before? he wondered. If so, he certainly couldn’t remember it. It was a pity that they only had another six days together but Arthur intended to make the very most of every minute. A small part of him warned that he was getting too attached, that whatever doubts he had about Lucinda were well founded. He had no illusions why she was going through with his transparent ploy but maybe that was what made it so equal.

Quid pro quo indeed.

Not that Arthur doubted that the attraction was mutual. Lucinda may have wanted something other than the intimacy from him but he was certain that she was equally intrigued by him as he was by her.

Even still, he’d been a little surprised at how easily she’d caved to his demand and at first, it had been a little off-putting.

Is this really as indecent a proposal as it seems on the surface? Is she really only doing this to ensure I take the company back?

“Well, well, w— “ he started to say as he opened the door but the last “well” died on his lips as he saw who stood there. He gaped in dismay.

“Reggie!” he choked, his eyes darting back into the hall behind his sister. “What the hell are you doing here?”

His sister peered at him with speculative blue eyes and sighed, shaking her head as she realized she’d come at a bad time.

“Aren’t you going to put on some clothes?” she asked plaintively and Arthur tensed, suddenly understanding what she was doing there.

“Why?” he asked slowly, taking in her black dress and solemn expression. “Regina…”

“Can I come in?” Regina asked but she didn’t wait for him to accept before brushing past him and sauntering into the foyer, looking about the condo with impassive eyes. She’d been there before but somehow, she seemed to want to feast her eyes on anything but what she was seeing—her half-dressed brother.

“Reg, I’m glad you’re here,” Arthur told her gruffly. “But this isn’t a good time.”

“You know what today is, Arthur,” she said quietly. “Please tell me you’re going to come with me.”

“I’m not!” he barked harshly. “You know I’m not. I told you I wasn’t going!”

Regina nodded and turned her head away but not before Arthur saw the edges of her full mouth turn inward.

“I understand why you feel this way but you need to listen to me.”

Arthur chewed on the insides of his cheeks, willing himself not to scream everything that was bubbling to the surface of his lips.

“I’m listening.”

“If you don’t go to the funeral today, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.
