Chapter 16

Shawn

“Hello. You must be Shawn.”

Shawn swallowed and nodded as he stared at the man standing in the doorway before him. The first thing that caught his attention was how dark and intense the man's eyes were. They were as dark as night itself and framed by low, bushy eyebrows. His facial structure was sharp, his jawline scruffy. His black, curly hair was tucked behind his ears at the moment.

Everything about this man screamed alpha, especially that broody air about him.

“Yes. You're Paxton? Dakota and Dalton sent me over here to get some training.”

“Yup. Come on in.”

Paxton stepped back to let inside his home, which was half of a duplex in an industrial part of town. Despite the space being fairly small and narrow, it had enough personal touches to make the space warm and inviting. There were a lot of plants around, adding a nice splash of color in darker corners.

“Oh, h-hello,” greeted another voice through the pass into the kitchen.

“Ah. Shawn, that's Henry, my mate and another alpha of Thunderstorm.”

“Pleased to meet you,” Shawn politely greeted, nodding his head. Unlike Paxton, Henry was cute and attractive but in a dorky way. He had oversized ears, short hair, and amazing blue eyes.

“Do you want any tea?”

“No, I'm good, thanks.”

Paxton chuckled and led Shawn upstairs. “So, you have anger issues...?”

“Amongst others,” Shawn muttered as he followed. “I'm here to try and keep them under control so I don't lose control of the wolf.”

“I'll try and do what I can to help you. I've personally found meditation helps. Everyone makes fun of it but those that have tried it benefit. They'll never shout it from the mountain tops, though.”

“Well, it does seem a bit... weak, doesn't it?”

“That's what everyone thinks,” Paxton shrugged as he reached the second floor and turned into the nearest room. Inside the room, there was a desk with a chair and CD player, as well as plants in the corners and mats spread out on the floor.

“You don't believe that?”

“Not for a second. Meditating allows for us to transform negative thoughts into positive ones so that we are calmer, more relaxed, and... happier... in general. It allows us to really pick apart our own minds in a constructive way.”

“I don't have time to meditate,” Shawn muttered his complaint.

“Everyone says that, too. If you take just ten or fifteen minutes a day to meditate, the rest of your day is often a lot more productive because you've prepared yourself for it.”

Shawn paused for a moment. Well, that did make sense.

“Did you bring your clothes?”

Shawn patted his backpack.

“All right, there's a bathroom just outside here and further down the hall.”

Shawn left the room and found the bathroom, then shook his head as he changed from his jeans and t-shirt into baggier sweatpants and sweatshirt.

This is ridiculous. I can't believe I'm doing this...

Once Shawn had changed, he returned to the room. By then, Paxton had changed as well into what looked like yoga pants and a muscle shirt.

Paxton was muscular but not as muscular as his Canyon.
