Chapter 12

Rosa raised an eyebrow. The expression on her face was a universal one; one that Lexie had seen on her grandmother’s face countless times. It still didn’t explain what the hell was going on. Rosa grabbed the bear’s paw and dragged the huge beast toward the restaurant. Lexie shook her head. An apex predator being led by the hand by a little old lady? She’d seen it all. She started to stand up, but her surroundings became blurry and she was unsteady on her feet. Cole was at her side in an instant.

“Whoa. Easy there. You’ve had a shock.” His rugged features looked sheepish. Nervous even.

She stared up at him wondering where she could even begin. “I thought it was attacking you. But you were laughing. And then… And then…” she shook her head and reached her hands up to her temples. It sounded ridiculous even saying it silently in her head. “Rosa leads the bear – the fucking bear – away like it’s a naughty child.”

His features crinkled up and she couldn’t help noticing the dimple on the left side of his mouth. “I’ll admit it must seem strange to an outsider.”

She nodded.

He fixed her on the spot with his luscious brown eyes and took a deep breath. She got the feeling again that he was nervous about something. He glanced back in the direction Rosa and the bear had gone.

“Is she gonna be okay?” she asked. She’d been so captivated by Cole that she hadn’t thought of the older woman’s safety. Neither had he, she realized with confusion. It didn’t seem like him.

He nodded. “It’s Sam I’m worried about.”

“Sam?” Lexie echoed.

“The bear.”

She nodded slowly. “I thought that’s what you meant. Cute name for a bear.”

He sighed, long and heavy.

“What is it, Cole? Something’s bugging you.”

He closed his eyes. “There’s no easy way to lead into this,” he said finally.

“Into what?” Lexie frowned.

“Sam’s my cousin, Lexie.”
