Chapter 9: Mystery
It was getting cold outside by the time Caleb felt comfortable trying his luck breaking into the zoo. Midnight had brought a fast, chilling wind to the city that crept around his lightweight scarf and made his whole body shiver every time it passed him by. He didn't care. He'd parked his car a few streets away from the deserted grounds, mindful that a night guard would probably still be poking around. The gate was before him, looking a bit looming and skeletal in its layers of white paint by the light of nearby streetlamps.
He paid it no mind, same as the weather. Caleb scanned the nearby vegetation, trying to find a tree with low branches he could use to help him scale the fence. Finally he found one, leaves dangling over so far they almost hit the ground. Even better, it was next to a bench! He quickly leapt up on it, as quietly as he could, and vaulted himself over with one hand clinging to the tree.
His body slammed into the ground with a loud thud, and he crouched down for a moment as he let the sound fade, listening for any others in reply. There was nothing, only the calls of animals off in the rest of the zoo. If any humans heard him, they weren't coming. Not immediately, anyway. Caleb got up and brushed himself off then started off down the path to where James would be.
By the time he got there, he'd started loping at a fast pace, suddenly paranoid of being seen despite no evidence that he was. Caleb looked down into the enclosure and pondered three things. First, how he was going to get down into it safely so he could talk to James privately. He'd brought rope, and some climbing gear, but the location of cameras was unclear from above. And how was he going to avoid security cameras? He figured if worst came to worst he could ask Willow to erase them, but that would require far too much explanation that he didn't want to give yet. At all. If she's my mate, she'll know about all of this eventually, he thought with a grimace. I'll want her to. But it's probably way too soon! She was already suspicious enough though, there was no way she would do it without some answers. Besides, he didn't know who if anyone was watching them in the moment. Someone could already have seen him by the time he talked to her again no matter how swift his contact.
Finally, he wondered, where exactly was James hiding down there?
He saw movement from one corner, obscured by trees. It didn't look like a bear's shape. Caleb shook his head slowly and paced the length of the balcony, looking for something he could attach his rope to safely. There was nothing that looked particularly good. At least the railing itself seemed like it might not give way under his weight.
Caleb wrapped his fingers around the edge and tried to shake it or move it in anyway.
