Bear

Between Lorelei, Mace, and Haley, they have chewed me out, punched me in the face, and I’ve traded blows with my right hand man. We both backed down in the end, but as I rub my aching jaw and think about my bruises, I know I fucked up leaving for so long without explaining myself to anyone.

I walk up to her front door and sit to wait on her step again. Lorelei had kindly given me Haley’s schedule, and I promised to use the information for good. And I am.

While I wait for her, I think about her. About life. About my choices. I needed to leave. I needed to get clean. I know I’m willing to give it all up, coke, booze, my life, everything for Haley.

And last night wasn’t part of the deciding factor. She’s fucking amazing in bed and I love fucking her, but I knew before checking into rehab that I needed to succeed because life without her is not a life I want to live.

I’d gone into rehab with a problem and left with solutions, hardened resolve, and a plan. A plan to make Haley mine for good. I sit, inhaling the fresh air and aware of the quiet. Her home is on a few acres, all alone at the end of the road and as far from the neighbors as she can get.

It’s a peaceful, beautiful place and I know why she loves it so much.

She’s walking up the drive and she stops dead in her tracks. This time, though—unlike last night—a smile crosses her lips.

“You’re back,” she says, her beautiful smile making my stupid heart flip-flop.

I nod, tucking the yellow envelop behind my back, but not before she sees the damn thing. “What’s that?” she asks, walking right up to me and pulling me into a hug. I embrace her and she deftly snags the envelope from my fingers.

“It’s for you, anyway.” I smile and press a quick kiss to her lips.

“What is it?” Her wide hazel eyes meet mine and I shrug.

“I dunno. Guess you’ll have to open it to find out.” My stomach is twisting up in knots, and I wonder if she’s going like my gift. I owe her my life. I know that one day coke would be my end, either my heart would explode, I get into a fight I couldn’t win, or hell, I’d crash and wreck my bike. For so long I thought I couldn’t live without the stuff, now I’m sure I can’t live with it. And I have her to thank for giving me something worth quitting for as well as for helping me see the light.

She pulls back a bit, takes a step back into the sunlight. The bright lights illuminate her like the goddess she is and she squints slightly as she smiles at me, turning the envelope over in her slim hands. “Are you sure?”

I nod. I sure as hell didn’t get this for myself.

With a sigh, she runs her finger along the flap and lifts it to peer inside.
