Chapter 15

After checking with Joan and Chevonne, I walked across Theodore Lane with my sister’s poster. Tyler and Mary Walsh’s cottage had a riot of tulips and clumps of iris in their yard, also surrounded by a picket fence. I’d always wanted to live in a Cape Cod, its door and shutters painted green, and I admired the house every day. Birds trilled above me, and a butterfly wandered over the bright azalea bush I passed. The warm sunshine cheered my spirits.

So did all the Peanuts paraphernalia in Maddie’s office at Silver Moon. She’d collected mugs, file folders, Snoopy bobbleheads, and many other items. Eric Dyer had given Maddie a framed and signed book cover proof for Speak Softly, and Carry a Beagle, showing Sally holding Snoopy, last Christmas. My sister had danced around the tree in absolute joy and hung the artwork beside her worktable.

“Thanks, Sash.” Maddie slid the poster out of its cardboard tube and spread it flat, eyeing the border and image. “I really needed to see these details up close.”

Asia Gibson rushed over from her desk and squealed in excitement. “I love the 1920s vibe. We’re doing a whole series for the Flynn Wins ad campaign, using sepia tones, with him and his fiancée in vintage clothing. She looks like a flapper, in fact. Very sultry, with fringe on her dress and a long pearl necklace.”

That didn’t surprise me, given Flynn’s flair for drama. He’d once asked me to appear in a commercial, but I turned him down flat. I perched on a tall stool to watch Maddie sketch out a few ideas for the ad. When the door opened again, a gust of fresh air swept into the large room. We all grabbed loose papers before they flew in every direction.

“Traffic was wild, to say the least. So glad I’m out of that.” Zoe Fisher, her turquoise and pink hair gelled into spikes, tossed her purse on a chair and then leaned over Maddie’s table. “You almost done with Hanson’s Law Firm ad? He’s so full of himself.”

“I can attest to that.” Rather than dwell on my ex-husband, I changed the subject. “Has anyone visited the K-9 and Kitty Korner shop, by any chance?”

Zoe waved a hand. “I did, the day after they opened. What a mess! So disorganized, and the Hartmans fought like crazy over how to stock the shelves or display stuff at the register. Like World War Three, I tell ya. And Lucy can curse like a drunken sailor.”

“That bad?”

“Yeah, and Teddy Hartman looked ready to wallop her. He stopped when I walked in to check out a new collar for my French bulldog,” Zoe said. “His wife grabbed a bunch of trophies off the counter and then dumped them in the back room. I guess her husband thought they looked too cheap. She was not happy, let me tell you.”

“Trophies?” I suddenly recalled Jay mentioning those earlier. “What kind? Like tennis, golf, or bowling?”

“Not if you play with an axe instead of a ball.
