Get a Real Job!

Like angry, toothless thunder,

Indifference roaring in the dark,

Conformity’s silent wail can be deafening.

—Dad

We were driving in the car when the John Mayer song, “No Such Thing” came on. I cranked up the volume—wanted you to hear the hook. “I just found out there’s no such thing as the real world, just a lie you got to rise above.” Now that you are knee-deep in an outdated educational system, designed to cram your free spirit into a long-gone box, the message in that song is more important than ever.

Society wants to define you. You are coming of age in a time of extraordinary change and exciting, wide-open possibilities. There’s a new world order of ideas emerging through the quicksand thinking of an old guard clinging to the past. Unlimited, unimagined, undiscovered opportunities are calling to be created. Original thoughts are waiting in the wings; new solutions ready to take center stage.

What is the real world?

What is a real job?

In this time of unprecedented change and transformation, the definition is all yours. As John Mayer said, now more than ever, “There’s no such thing.”

I love what Steve Jobs says about how we’re brainwashed to live inside the lines set by the normal world:

When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is, and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money. That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you, and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.66

Most people just go along with the program and lead safe but limited lives.

If Steve Jobs or Thomas Edison played it safe, I’d be writing this on a typewriter by candlelight right now. Let’s define the word job, and I don’t mean Steve. He defined himself.

Job: Doing assigned tasks for someone else’s purpose, in exchange for money and the illusion of security. (From the Pig Latin “J.O.B.”: just over broke!)

Work: Any activity in which you do not associate an empowering purpose and meaning.67 Spending your precious time each day doing things that are meaningless to you is slow death. You can “work” to fulfill someone else’s dreams or your own. If you are a cog in someone else’s machine, you are expendable. There’s always another cog.

Your work: Any activity in which you do associate empowering purpose and meaning.68 Motivation is derived from meaning. A lack of motivation is a sure sign that whatever you’re doing doesn’t mean anything to you. So if that’s the case either look at your job differently by asking how it fits into the big picture of your life, or quit. But you may not have to change anything but your mind for your job to transform from menial to meaningful.
