CHAPTER 11
Working in the Lift & Escalator business was ok but it didn’t pay enough ‘bread’ and we were exploited in my opinion. The lads I worked with were mainly sound, Sam, Roger, AJ, Mal and Chris but I was applying for everything I could and in November I got a break, or so I thought.
I went to worked for a large bakery in Leeds on the maintenance, the money was better and the overtime was there to be had but the shift pattern was shite. 8 hour shifts meant you had to work six days a week which were on a rotation and actually meant, you never a full 24 hours off!! The work was non-stop and anyone that works, or has worked in the food industry knows that break downs mean big money losses straight away, so the maintenance lads had it right on their shoulders. Within a few month, I was Deputy Engineering Manager and managed to implement a 12 hours shift system, which meant the lads had a couple of days off each week, much to everyone’s benefit.
Times were still very hard for us as a family with Lucy winning skating tournaments all over the place, Sue was spending all her time working or with Lucy’s skating and I was either at the bakery or on the doors. It wasn’t long before things had to give and we were stretched that far that our marriage once again hit the wall and we split for the second time. That old yarn about the seven year itch………..we split after seven years and then split again after a further seven years!!!!
I wasn’t doing too badly financially; we had a few quid coming in from the doors and I was getting plenty of shifts in at the bakery. I had a couple of brief flings and then went steady with Karen, a girl from Heckmondwyke, we had a good laugh and I could let my hair down with her. We went over to Harrogate one weekend to see Doug, one of my mates from the scooter club days, great great friend of mine, even through to this day. Doug and I have our birthdays two days apart and even though we didn’t see a great deal of each other, we always kept in touch. He would regularly fall out with a lot of our other mates when we were younger but it was different with he and myself and we always had q solid bond. We had a cracking weekend, a total chill from the ‘rat race’ and he was made up for me, that I was spending time with someone new and was in a happy state of mind. I acted like I was 21 again for three months and then went back to wife Sue and daughter Lucy to try make things work. Our relationship was never even remotely the same but with Lucy’s skating career, it was more a convenience I think.
