8 Diving for Dollars

Paula the PA called the house early the next morning. The police investigation was over and the show was on again. It’s amazing how a little pressure from Hollywood can speed things along.

The last contestants were just finishing up the obstacle course when Frank and I got there. Kenya Krugman was stomping around, looking proud and clutching her ticket for the next round. Miles Stillman prowled around the course, shouting encouragement to the pirates-in-training who hadn’t finished yet. Frank and I went to the costume tent and got dressed.

When we got out, Marlene Krall was pacing back and forth on the deck of the ship, looking nervous. Pedro Alvarado stood nearby, looking just as edgy as his producer.

“C’mon,” I said to Frank. “Let’s get close to the ship and see what we can hear.” Trying not to attract any attention, we made our way through the crowd up to the ship.

We reached the gangplank at the same time as Samantha Olson. She looked tired and dirty.

“Hey, Samantha,” I said. “What you’ve been up to?”

She smiled weakly at me. “Working with the PAs all night to get this next event set up,” she said.

Marlene Krall spotted Samantha and came down the gangplank to talk to her. “Is it ready?” Marlene asked.

“I’m feeling tired, but otherwise okay,” Samantha replied. “How are you?”

“I’m sorry,” said Marlene. “I’ve been so worried about keeping things running that it seems like everything else slips my mind. Are you all right? Would you like some coffee?”

“No thanks,” Samantha said. “It would just keep me awake, and I intend to crash once the next game is under way. Maybe sooner.” She shot the producer a wry smile.

“So you found the missing treasure props?” Ms. Krall said.

“Yeah,” Samantha replied. “I don’t know why Clay moved them, but Paula turned them up. She said they’re all in place.”

“So is the game working? Is it safe?” Ms. Krall asked.

“Yeah, it’s fine,” Samantha told her. “It’s great. The camera will love it. I personally vouch for its safety.”

“Are you sure?” Ms. Krall asked.

“Who do you think I am, Clay?” Samantha asked. “Of course I’m sure. I checked the whole rig over personally. It’s in the water and ready to go. It’ll look great on camera, and you’ll name your first kid after me. Satisfied?”

“Samantha, you’re a lifesaver!” Marlene declared.

“Remember that when you see the overtime on my next paycheck,” Samantha said.

“Don’t worry,” Ms. Krall said, “I’ll remember. We’ll even give you a special thanks in the credits for this episode—right before the dedication to Clay.”

“I’m honored,” Samantha said. But she seemed more tired than honored.

“Well, let’s get this going before anything more can go wrong,” Marlene said. She turned to the nearest PA. “Gather the contestants. I want to start the treasure diving event within the half hour. Make sure that Miles is ready to go too.”

“He likes an hour break in between segments,” the PA reminded her.

“Well, we’d all like more time than we have,” Ms. Krall replied, “but the scheduling troubles make that impossible.
