An impressive image of the USS Texas firing a salvo from its main gun battery turrets. The combined weight of the projectiles fired in a salvo from the battleship was 15,000lb. The battleship was fitted with various models of the 14-inch main battery guns during its time in service. The tripod masts and the missing flag (admiral’s) bridge mark the photograph as having been taken between 1926 and 1927. (National Archives)

The USS Texas is shown here in this photograph dated 12 February 1930. One of the modernization improvements made to the ship, and to other dreadnought-type US navy battleships in-between the First and Second World Wars, was the addition of new amidships armoured casemates as seen in this port-side photograph. These armoured casemates housed six 5-inch secondary guns (three on either side of the ship). (National Archives)
