Leira waited until the last of the shipments were gone and the refugees from old New York were headed home. She wearily opened a portal to the warm kitchen and smiled at the sight of Correk sitting at the table, his head down and softly snoring. She stepped through and looked back in time to see Wolfstan's workers stumble out of the room where they had been locked, still angry and looking around. Turner tapped his cane on the ground and was gone in a blink. It didn't take long for them to look toward the open warehouse and realize something was missing. Leira let the portal close, watching some run toward the warehouse and others scatter into the night. "They must already have met Wolfstan," she whispered as she went around the table and gently kissed Correk on his neck. He stirred in his sleep and raised his head, his eyes half open. "You're home," he said, smiling, holding out his arms to pull in Leira.
She gave into his hug and held his head against her belly. "Let's go upstairs and go to bed for what's left of this night."
"Interesting mission?" asked Correk, yawning as he rose.
"Yeah, in more than one way. I'll tell you everything tomorrow over breakfast tacos. Come on," she said, taking Correk's hand and leading him toward the stairs. She paused at the sound of the troll laughing, her brow furrowing. "Did you hear that? I could have sworn I heard more than one troll."
"No, Nibbler isn't supposed to be here till tomorrow with your dad. You're just tired," said Correk, following her up the stairs. "I smell bayberry. Did Turner show up?"
"I can get very little past you. He came to help," she said, passing across the landing to the next flight of stairs. She looked toward the troll's room and saw a light move under the door but didn't hear anything. "Too tired to care," she muttered.
"Do you get some things past me?" asked Correk as they climbed the last few stairs and made their way into their bedroom. Leira shut the door behind them and slipped out of her shoes and her jeans, pulling her shirt over her head. "We can talk about that later too."
Correk grinned sleepily and pulled off his boots, sliding out of his jeans and t-shirt. Leira pulled back the covers and pulled him closer to her. "All that matters is right here and now."
