11:02 p.m.

I didn’t get a chance to go back to Futureland for the rest of the week. I didn’t get a chance to see Dooley or check on her. Even though she was reset and told me she was okay, each day away only made me more anxious, more curious, more confused. Aurielle was still at Grandma Ava’s house, and I watched her like a hawk. What if Aurielle glitched, too, and tried to hurt Grandma Ava while I was gone?

All the questions took over my mind. I projected a holographic bulletin board from my Futurewatch and pinned messages on it. Made a timeline of the events with virtual index cards, swapping their order over and over, to try to see what made the most sense. I had to figure this out. There had to be something I was missing.

So far, I had a few pieces of real evidence.

Glitching revs. Glitching tech. Weird symbol. Weird parents. Missing kid. All happening after we arrived in Atlanta.

I had to solve this thing.

No matter what.

As soon as I was back on Saturday night, I was ready to crack this case and figure it out. Weekend nights when the park was open, my parents would be too busy to track me.

My plan was brilliant, you see. I’d stowed Dooley away in my parents’ lab, right with the older revs, before they locked up for the night. She’d disable the security cameras and let me inside so I didn’t have to use my login and alert Mom and Dad. We’d search the lab to find about why they were acting so weird. We would be in and out without a trace. Top-tier investigative work.

“Dooley? Dooley, are you ready?” I whispered, testing the microphone Dooley had installed on my Future-vision goggles. If it worked, she’d be able to hear exactly what I’d said, inside her head.

I hid behind a snack stand. Tonight was busier than ever, with little kids sucking on lumi-pops zooming around everywhere.

Dooley to Cam, she called back. Her voice didn’t sound out loud. It played inside my head, for only me to hear. Dooley’s updates to the Future-vision goggles worked perfectly. Everything is ready, over.

“Great.” I swiped screens on my watch. “My parents are still in the Galactic Gallery. We only have about forty-five minutes to get everything.”

Ready when you are, she replied.

“See you in ten.”

I speed-walked down the Futureland paths, hustling to get back to the condo to enter the lab from there.

“CJ!”

I stopped in my tracks.

I spun around. It was Yusuf, out of breath and wearing a black hoodie and sneakers.

“Yusuf? Uh—what—what’s going on? Are you okay?” I asked.

“Are you okay?” he asked. “You haven’t been answering your phone. And you barely talked to us all week at school. I came to check on you. Long shot trying to find you with all these people here, but…I figured where else would you be?”

“Oh…yeah.” I fidgeted. I’d really messed things up.

Nerves rushed into my stomach, right as Dooley’s voice came through my goggles again.
