Chapter Four

A mangy dog saved them. A half-starved mutt with its ribs showing ran out from a nearby building and showed itself in the open before it disappeared again, and he heard a sentry chuckle. “Ach, ist nur ein Hund.” Just a dog.

They slowly let out their breath. Harry grunted an apology. “I didn’t see that damn bottle.” He grinned. “You know what they say, booze can kill you.”

“Yeah, very funny. We need to keep moving, and this time not a sound.”

“I’ll be as quiet as the grave.”

“Don’t mention graves, you might just tempt fate.”

They worked their way forward, slowly, cautiously, making sure to remove every piece of debris from their path. They got within five yards of the two sentries. So far it didn’t look like they’d heard them, but the last part was tricky. There was no cover, and for the first time, he was glad Harry had come along. Killing both men without making a sound would be impossible for one man.

He murmured, “We have to rush them and finish them before they can shout a warning.”

Harry showed his knife. “I’m ready.”

“Take the guy on the left, I’ll take the right.”

They silently laid their Garands on the rubble and prepared to attack. They swapped glances, and Cassidy nodded. “Now.”

They sprinted across the final stretch, Harry tripped and recovered on the loose stonework, and they got within two yards of the enemy before they reacted. Their heads spun around and they brought up the rifles, too late. Ray dived across the final gap, the blade of his Ka-Bar flashing toward the SS trooper, who twisted away at the last moment. The soldier attempted to defend himself from the blade and simultaneously opened his mouth to shout a warning.

In a last desperate move, he jammed his elbow into the guy’s mouth and felt teeth crack and break. He kept his elbow pressed into his mouth while bringing around the knife to bury it into his chest, but the guy twisted away like an eel. For a vital second his mouth opened and was free to shout a warning. It came out as a strangled gargle when Ray lunged toward him and used the knife, wiping the blade across his exposed neck, and pressing it deep into his windpipe. Blood fountained from the gaping wound and he dropped the body and rushed to help Harry, who was in trouble. He’d plunged his knife into the Kraut, but in his death agony the soldier was thrashing around like a beached fish. Harry had a hand clamped over his mouth to stop him from crying out, but blood was fountaining from the gaping wound in his chest, coating everything with a red, sticky mess, and his hand slipped.

Cassidy bunched a fist and lashed out at the German to knock him out while Harry finished him off, but it was too late. The guy screamed, “Alarm!” a fraction of a second before Cassidy’s punch landed. Harry dragged out the knife and plunged the blade into his chest.
