Before he went to bed, Batthew tested a new ingredient for Mum’s Goodbye Hug:

Half a teaspoon of Olfactory Classic Shampoo

Cream of cucumber eye mask

5 grams of spearmint toothpaste

3 drops of lavender oil

The headspace of freshly-washed cotton sheets

2 petals of frangipani flower

VANILLA AND PEACHES?

Batthew held up the vial of VANILLA AND PEACHES he’d pocketed from the Smell Library and brought it to his nose. A creamy, floral sweetness skimmed his airways. He poured the vial into the mix, gave it a gentle shake and dripped the perfume onto his wrist. It wasn’t quite right. A step backwards, in fact.

He sat back, disappointed.

From his seat at the perfume organ, Batthew could see the front gates of the Botanic Gardens through the window. The crowd was still there. But this was a night-time vigil, not an excited mob like the day before. The mood was hushed, but hopeful. Optimistic. A vendor handed out free ice-cream scoops that were the colours of the Titan Arum. Street performers contorted their bodies into the shape of the corpse flower for the entertainment of younger children. The crowd linked arms, singing songs to cheer themselves up, praying that the mystery would be solved before the flower wilted the very next day. Candlenut was holding out hope that the Titan Arum would somehow still be returned …
